A good parting gift

Principal of Andhra University College of Arts and Commerce J.V. Prabhakara Rao has given the best parting gift to the university while leaving the campus on retirement.
He spent about Rs.25,000 on renovating room No. 139 in Nagarjuna Hostel where he stayed during 1969-71 while studying M.Com.
Flooring was done with granite slabs, walls are fixed with ceramic tiles and wooden cupboards and a shelf are provided. Demand for allotting this deluxe room next year is obvious and Chief Warden T. Narayana set some conditions.
The room will be allotted to the students who secured gold medal in their graduate study.
Vice-Chancellor L. Venugopal Reddy while inaugurating the renovated room, wanted all the retired professors and executives of AU to follow the example set by Prof. Prabhakara Rao and improve the hostel rooms in which they have stayed during their student days. This would benefit the students and also improve the image of university, Prof. Reddy said. After inaugurating the renovated room, Prof. Venugopal Reddy inspected the hygienic conditions of the hostel mess (where students complained a few days ago that rotten vegetables are being cooked) and inquired from the Head Cook how the food is prepared. He also tasted a curry and felt satisfied.
The Vice-Chancellor also provided some suggestions to Dr. Narayana on how to improve the quality of food.
Some research scholars who have been admitted recently want the administration to remove non-scholars from the hostels allotted to the research scholars.
This has been eliminated during Prof. Y.C. Simhadri’s tenure as VC and the present administration has to take the problem seriously, the scholars say.
New Principal takes charge Prof. P. Rajendra Prasad of Department of Geophysics has taken charge as Principal of AU College of Science and Technology, from Prof. P. Veerraju last week.
Prof. Prabhakara Rao felicitated HoDs of various departments felicitated Prof. Prabhakara Rao and appreciated the services he has rendered to the college as Principal and the programmes he has taken up in the Department of Commerce and Management Studies.

Placement brochure released Prof. Venugopal Reddy released a placement brochure brought out by the AU College of Arts and Commerce. The brochure will be sent to various organisations and companies. Prof. J.V. Prabhakara Rao, Placement Officer B. Mohan Venkatram and others were present.
Management Development Programme The Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises Development Institute of Central Government and the Department of Commerce and Management jointly organised a five-day management development programme on business skills. Prof. Venugopal Reddy inaugurated the programme.

Students receive cash awards The Samvinmayi Gayatri Charitable Trust organised a function to present the Prof. V. Radhakrishna Murthy memorial cash awards to meritorious engineering students. Cash awards of Rs.5,000 each were presented to the students of computer science and systems engineering branch of B. Tech. course in engineering colleges located in the Greater Visakha area. The awards were sponsored by Prof. Radhakrishna Murthy’s widow Leelavathi.
K. Sowmya and I. Raghavendra Rao of Vignan’s Institute of Information Technology and T. Namrata and K. Yashwanth Kumar of Sanketika Vidya Parishad Engineering College received the awards. Prof. Venugopal Reddy presented the awards.
Students donate blood One hundred students donated blood at a camp organised at the VIPS College, Kapuluppada last week, according to Principal S. Ramakrishna Rao.
AIMS students win prizes Students of Ambedkar Institute of Management Studies won six prizes in Vertex 2008, an inter B-school meet organised by the Pydah College of Engineering and Technology (Gambheeram) . The first prize winners are Manoj Samantara and Ansuman Purohit (business quiz); Bipul Kumar, Sirish Rathore and Manoj (market masters); Bipul, Sirish and Ansuman (ad-instinct); Nitesh Kumar Shrivastava (young executive). Second prizes: Kumar Vijish Vasudevan, Basudev Mandi, Amiya Ranjan Swain, Sandhya Shakya, D. Bhavani and Lakshmana Rana (dazzle dance) and Nitesh Kumar, Pabitra Roy, Lakshman Rana and Bhavani (skit).
Talk on consumer education First year students of Andhra Medical College heard a talk on consumer rights and responsibilities, given by chairman of Visakha Consumer Education and Service Society Chapa Kumar. He explained how traders resort to under weighing, how to purchase quality gold, whom and how to report if bribe is demanded in government offices, procedure to be followed to file complaints if services by Government departments is not provided satisfactorily.
Farewell function Prof. Venugopal Reddy advised the students to dream big but work hard in a systematic manner to achieve the goal, at a function organised by the T.S.R. and T.B.R. Degree and P.G. College to bid farewell to its final year students. Noted orthopaediacian S.V. Adinarayana Rao and College correspondent T. Balarama Krishna were present.
