Hike in wages comes with conditions

Teachers of higher education in the State are waiting for a long time for implementation of UGC-recommended pay-scales and their wish has been fulfilled with the Government issuing a GO recently. The new scales come into effect with January 2006. But the contents of GO are certainly a botheration for the teachers who are lazy and who take things easy. This is the main topic being discussed in the campus. The conditions laid down for promotion are meant to make a teacher a true academician and researcher.

The service period required to become a professor has been reduced from 17 years to 15 years but one has to achieve a minimum of 400 points in the academic grade indicator and for this one's publication track record must be good.

Being good here means one must have publications to his credit in the national and international publications and books that have ISBN number. ISBN number is given to the books published by reputed publishers. This is certainly a deterrent to the lazy teachers who get a few books printed at a local press and show them as his or her “publications”.

Publications of articles in the peer review journals and record of research guidance, active academic activity and guidance are necessary.

An associate professor with three years experience can now become a professor. From now on an assistant professor or an associate professor can apply to the university directly once he or she becomes eligible for promotion.

The university teachers are stand to gain a lot and according to rough calculations a professor gets a hike or nearly Rs. 20,000, an associate professor a few thousand rupees less and an assistant professor stand to gain around Rs. 10,000. The new pay will be paid from January 2010 and the rest of the hiked amount will go to GPF.

Communication skills

Andhra University Vice-Chancellor B. Satyanarayana is always stressing on communication skills and proficiency in English language so that the students stay ahead in the job market and while pursing higher studies.

He inaugurated one such programme organised by the Department of Economics with assistance from the CTC Communications. Principal L.K. Mohana Rao HoD of Economics R. Sudarsana Rao, MD of CTC Communications A.S. Prasad, and English professor L. Manjula Davidson and others spoke.

IDRC on social sciences

The AU UGC-Academic Staff College regularly holds refresher courses for teachers and organised an inter-disciplinary refresher course (IDRC) in social sciences recently. Registrar P.V.G.D. Prasada Reddy, who was chief guest of the valedictory function said the subject upgradation is a continuous process and refresher courses guide the teachers in this aspect.He wanted the social sciences to become quantitative and the social scientists should learnt how to make pragmatic criticism on the political process, administrative lacuna and social instruments of development.

Director of ASC G. Ramachandrudu suggested that the social scientists should concentrate on systematic exploration of relationship between persons, community and society; addressing the internal organisational challenges of decreasing marginality and increasing diversity; developing a concept of deep democracy that would extend democracy from the political to the cultural and economic arenas.

Matrubhasha Denostavam

The Gayatri Vidya Parishad Degree College is one of the few colleges that celebrated the mother tongue day (Maastru Bhasha Denostavam). A former lecturer of BVK College D.V. Surya Rao spoke on the present status of Telugu language and urged the students and youth to protect the language which is lacking support in the era of globalisation.

Principal P. Raja Ganapathi presided. He felicitated Mr. Surya Rao. Students Keerthi, Vishnupriya and Prasanthi spoke on Telugu language and its greatness. Lecturers K.K. Mahalakshmi, M.F. Rehman, V.V. Sharma and Saibala and others participated.

Two-day workshop at AITAM

A two-day workshop on English language was organised at Aditya Institute of Technology and Management (AITAM-Tekkali) from Thursday. Former professor of English, Osmania University, Kanakadurga inaugurated the workshop. Chairman of the college K. Someswara Rao, Director V.V. Nageswara Rao, Rajendra Karmarkar of A.U.P.G. Center – Kakinada and B. Sailakshmi of Government Polytechnic College- Visakhapatnam addressed the students. Over 50 delegates from various engineering colleges attended the workshop.

Cultural fest

Vignan's Institute of Engineering for Women conducted a three-day cultural fest from February 22. The fest was named as View Era 2010 and was organised by the Department of Management Studies. Various activities like rangoli, paper presentation, elocution, mime, quiz, painting, dance and singing, treasure hunt, cooking and fashion show was held. Principal of the college A. Sesha Rao gave away the prizes.

Vikalpa -10

The Department of Information Technology of Aditya Institute of Technology and Management (AITAM) Tekkali, organised a one-day national level technical symposium recently. Dr. S. Raja, F Grade scientist of NSTL, was the chief guest. In his inaugural address Dr. Raja explained the functioning and importance of underwater weapon systems. Director of the college V.V. Nageswara Rao, Prof. G. Nageswara Rao (convenor of the meet), Prof. P. Srinivas of GITAM University and Prof. B. Venkateswarlu of Visakha Engineering College were present.
